Marc Marquez’s victory at the 2026 MotoGP Aragon came with a twist, as a critical error nearly cost his younger brother, a better finish in the race.
Despite Marc’s triumph at MotorLand Aragon, Alex could only manage fourth place, finishing 8.687 seconds behind and well outside the podium battle.
The showdown at Alcaniz saw Ducati’s Marc Marquez fend off a strong challenge from KTM’s Pedro Acosta, who pressed hard after both riders overtook polesitter on Sunday. Meanwhile, Alex Marquez found himself isolated, trailing by over five seconds from the top three but maintaining a 3.885-second gap ahead of Jorge Martin.
The defining moment came right at the start when Marc Marquez forgot to deactivate his rear ride height device entering Turn 1. This oversight caused his Ducati GP26 to bottom out through the opening corners, a rare mistake that could have altered the race outcome significantly for the Marquez brothers. Marc later expressed disappointment over this slip, acknowledging the impact it had on Alex’s race.
Alex Marquez, however, took the incident with humor. Speaking after the race, he laughed off Marc’s “huge mistake,” stating, “I thought his ride height device had broken, but he was the one who left it on. But we’re only human, and we all make mistakes. Sometimes I leave it on. These things happen.” His reluctance to capitalize fully on Marc’s error-choosing not to risk a risky move on the brakes at Turn 3-allowed rivals Jorge Martin and Raul Fernandez to slip past him, denying Alex a stronger finish.
Marc Marquez had entered the Aragon GP facing a 40-point deficit behind Jorge Martin in the standings. Although Bezzecchi clinched pole position with a new lap record, Marc dominated the race weekend by winning both the Aragon Sprint and the Grand Prix, beating Alex by 1.140 seconds in the Sprint. Martin’s struggles continued with fifth-place finishes in both sessions, enabling Marc to narrow his championship gap to 19 points and climb back into second place overall.
