Delhi is stepping up Rainwater Harvesting under Catch the Rain 2026 to conserve rainfall, support groundwater recharge and strengthen long-term water security through greater public participation.
The city of Delhi has started taking interest in water conservation and recharge of groundwater due to increasing water requirements of the capital. Under the ‘Catch the Rain 2026’ campaign, the government is motivating Rainwater Harvesting in order to conserve less rainwater through drains and make it available for productive uses.
The basic concept of the entire exercise remains very clear, which consists of conserving rainfall where it takes place and making it available for storage or recharge of groundwater. In the context of a growing city like Delhi with increasing population, construction work and water needs, rainwater conservation becomes a necessity for ensuring water security.
Catch the Rain 2026: Emphasis on Rainwater Harvesting
‘Catch the Rain 2026’ campaign is one of the many campaigns under the national initiative ‘Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: Catch the Rain’, which has been extended up to June 1, 2026. It emphasizes Rainwater Harvesting, recharge of groundwater, water storage and participation of people.
It basically involves capturing rain wherever it falls and not allowing it to go waste through drainages. In the case of Delhi, rooftop Rainwater Harvesting and recharge pits are some of the ways by which it can be achieved.
Importance of Groundwater Recharge in Delhi
Rainwater Harvesting can be used to collect rainwater from rooftops or other suitable surfaces. Following filtration, the water can then be stored or discharged into suitable recharge structures.
Such a practice would not only enhance the use of rainwater, but also ease the burden on the ground water. With initiatives like “Catch the Rain,” groundwater recharge through scientific means like recharge shafts and recharge pits is also being promoted by the Central government.
Push towards Water Conservation by Delhi Jal Board
Apart from this, Delhi Jal Board is also making efforts towards water conservation with its awareness campaign of “Catch the Rain” and “Save Water.” Rainwater Harvesting is one of the areas covered by Delhi Jal Board.
Provisions relating to Rainwater Harvesting already exist in Delhi. As per information available at Delhi Jal Board website, provisions have been made in the case of Rainwater Harvesting in new buildings having plot size of 100 square metres or above. There are also provisions related to incentive rebates and penalties in existing buildings.
Public participation is essential
Government efforts alone will not suffice for conserving water on a large scale. Individuals, RWA, schools, colleges, offices, and other institutions can participate in this effort by implementing an appropriate rainwater harvesting system.
The essence of Catch the Rain 2026 is that any water saved today can help Delhi in the future. With increasing urbanization and water requirements, rainwater conservation may become vital for Delhi’s future.
