Neeraj Chopra will return to action at the Lausanne Diamond League on Friday, with the Indian javelin star set to face one of his fiercest competitors in Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, in a major South Asian contest.
Chopra enters the meeting after winning silver at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, while Rumesh won gold.
Pathirage arrives at Lausanne with strong credentials. His 92.62m effort in Rome in June remains the world-leading mark this season and has lifted him to the top of the season’s world rankings. The performance has also secured his qualification for the final in Brussels.
Notably, Lausanne represents the 12th meeting of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League. The series began in Shanghai/Keqiao on May 16 and will conclude with the two-day final in Brussels on September 4-5.
The Lausanne meeting also features a field that includes Olympic and world champions along with newly crowned European champions. The event will be another opportunity for athletes to strengthen their positions in the qualification race. Ahead of the Lausanne meeting, 72 athletes had already secured places in the 2026 Wanda Diamond League Final. The qualified field includes Olympic and world champions, world-record holders and reigning Diamond League champions.
The men’s javelin contest will provide one of the key attractions of the meeting as Chopra and Pathirage go head-to-head.
