Mythological story of descent of Mother Ganga

According to the legend, before coming to earth, Mother Ganga used to reside in the Kamandal of Lord Brahma. King Bhagiratha performed hard penance for years for the peace and salvation of the souls of his ancestors. Mother Ganga was pleased with the penance of King Bhagiratha and accepted to come to earth, but the biggest problem was the speed of Mother Ganga. Because if Mother Ganga had fallen directly from heaven to the earth, the earth would have been engulfed in the abyss. Then King Bhagiratha reached to seek refuge in Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva tied Mother Ganga in her hair and opened a strand of her hair, from which a thin stream of Ganga fell on the earth. Due to the efforts of King Bhagiratha, Mother Ganga descended to earth on the tenth day of Jyeshtha Shukla, hence this holy day is celebrated as Ganga Dussehra. This day is also known as Bhagirathi Jayanti.
