Nicholas Hoult is set to land in Hogwarts. The Superman star is to play flamboyant Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The Superman actor will take over from Kenneth Branagh, who played the part in the 2002 film adaptation. The show stars Dominic McLaughlin playing Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The production on Harry Potter Season 2 will start in the coming weeks. This follows the debut season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which will air on HBO and stream exclusively on HBO Max.
Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart
Nicholas Hoult is another striking name in HBO’s growing Harry Potter reboot ensemble casting. On August 11, Deadline reported that the 36-year-old will portray Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2, which will adapt the second book in J.K. Rowling’s bestselling series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Who is Gilderoy Lockhart?
Lockhart is depicted as a famous wizard whose fame is based on his supposed daring feats against dangerous magical creatures. He is vain and boastful and is the new teacher of Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. His larger-than-life personality soon makes him a memorable figure, and his lack of real magical ability becomes an important part of the story.
In the movie, the character was played by Kenneth Branagh.
HBO’s Harry Potter Season 2 cast
joins a new crop of actors taking on the iconic characters from the books. Apart from the lead trio, John Lithgow is returning as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost is reprising his Rubeus Hagrid.
Season 2 is expected to carry on the show’s strategy of recasting the wizarding world’s most recognisable characters for a new generation of viewers.
When will season 2 of Harry Potter release?
The premiere of Season 1 is set for December 25, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max. The second season is supposed to come after the first season, but a specific date for the Season 2 premiere has yet to be announced. HBO has already greenlit the series for a second season, enabling the network to proceed with the adaptation of the second novel.
Francesca Gardiner is the series creator and showrunner, and Jon Brown, who wrote on the first season, has been promoted to co-showrunner for Season 2. Mark Mylod is also an executive producer and has directed several episodes. J.K. Rowling remains an executive producer with Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, David Heyman and other producers.
The series is a co-production between HBO, Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
