Amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high level meeting of CCS. The government gave many important instructions regarding the safety of Indians and expatriate community, availability of fertilizers for Rabi season, energy supply and safety of sailors.
Amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the Indian government has intensified its monitoring and preparations on the situation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while chairing a special meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Wednesday, gave several important instructions regarding the safety of citizens, energy supply, fertilizer availability and the safety of Indians living abroad. This was the fourth special CCS meeting called on this issue.
Government’s focus on the safety of Indians and expatriate community
In the meeting, Prime Minister Modi said that the ongoing conflict in West Asia should not affect India and Indians living abroad. He directed all the ministries to work in a coordinated manner and keep a constant eye on the situation.
The Prime Minister particularly expressed concern about Indian seafarers working in conflict-affected areas. He directed officials to develop a mechanism to provide timely information, emergency assistance and counseling to seafarers and their families, if needed.

Review on fertilizer and fuel supply for Rabi season
The availability of fertilizers for the upcoming Rabi season was also reviewed in the meeting. The government discussed ensuring supply of fertilizer from alternative sources. The Prime Minister gave clear instructions that farmers should not face shortage of fertilizers under any circumstances and the supply should remain uninterrupted.
The Cabinet Secretary told in the meeting that the availability of petrol, diesel, LNG and LPG in the country is sufficient. Sources of LPG procurement have been diversified and public sector refineries are operating at more than 100 per cent capacity due to adequate availability of crude oil. Apart from this, Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network and City Gas Distribution are also being expanded.
Emphasis also on renewable energy and monitoring system
Prime Minister Modi said that to strengthen energy security, it is necessary to promote solar energy and other non-fossil fuel based sources. He said that to make India self-reliant in the energy sector, there should be continuous investment and expansion in renewable energy.
Along with this, the Prime Minister directed all the ministries to adopt a “Whole of Government” approach and develop an integrated coordinated monitoring mechanism. He said that with this, the developments in West Asia can be regularly monitored and if necessary, immediate decisions can be taken to protect the interests of the citizens. This meeting is an indication that the government is making multi-level preparations to deal with possible challenges amid the current geopolitical situation.
