New Delhi [भारत]July 30 (ANI): Opposition MPs on Thursday started protesting at the Makar Gate in the Parliament complex over the alleged police action against student protesters and alleged embezzlement of funds for the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Demonstration regarding police action on students and Ram Mandir donation scam
MPs from several parties of the ‘India’ alliance gathered at Makar Dwar around 10.30 am. They held placards questioning who had ordered the alleged police action against student protesters at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 20. The MPs also raised slogans demanding accountability from the Center over the alleged use of force against students and alleged financial irregularities in donations to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya.
The protest came hours before the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 was to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha for consideration and passing. Earlier, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain had said that the opposition would also hold a meeting later in the day to decide its further strategy. “The entire opposition will protest here in front of Makar Dwar and then we will also decide our further course of action in today’s meeting,” Hussain told ANI.
Hussain said the opposition’s protest was aimed at highlighting the alleged police action against students during the July 20 protest. He accused the Center of failing to honor the assurances given to the protesters. “These protests are happening every day. The way they treated the students, and later, when there were discussions with the government with the protesting students, certain promises were made to them, that there would be no arrests, no FIRs would be filed, and the government would not go after anyone,” he said.
The opposition placed these three demands
He said the opposition had placed three demands before the government: resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a statement in Parliament on the alleged police action, and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hussain said, “There were three demands. One, the Prime Minister should resign. Second, he should come to the House and give a statement regarding police atrocities – which he has not done. Third, the Prime Minister should apologise. Two demands are still pending.”
Questioning the absence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah from the debate, Hussain said that Delhi Police works under the Union Home Ministry, and hence the Home Minister should answer questions about the alleged police action. He asked, “Under whom does the Delhi Police come? Under whose supervision do they work? From whom do they take instructions?… The ministry that comes under Amit Shah ji, the police that comes under him – do those instructions come from the Home Minister or the Railway Minister?”
SP raised the issue of misappropriation in Ram temple donations
Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav reiterated his party’s demand for accountability in the alleged Ram Mandir donation embezzlement case. Yadav told reporters, “This is a matter of faith of crores of people. The Samajwadi Party’s contention is that you came to power – and contested the elections – in the name of Lord Ram; yet, you allowed donations and offerings made to them to be stolen. This is a serious issue. This is not something that will just end; it will continue.”
On the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Yadav questioned whether strict laws alone could stop paper leaks. He said, “I have said it before, law alone cannot stop such things. Unless the entire process is managed by honest persons – from those who set the papers and print them to those who carry them – it can never be stopped.”
The protest came a day after Samajwadi Party MPs led by party chief Akhilesh Yadav demonstrated at Makar Dwar over alleged theft and misappropriation of offerings made at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya. Discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 is expected to begin at 2 pm in the Rajya Sabha. (ANI)
