Maharashtra Junk Food Ban: Maharashtra government has banned the sale, free distribution and advertisement of junk food in schools and within 50 meters of them. Know which food items are banned, what are the new FSSAI rules and what effect it will have on schools and canteen operators.
Maharashtra government has taken a big step to control the increasing obesity and bad eating habits of children. Now the sale, free distribution and advertisement of junk food has been banned in all schools of the state and within their 50 meter radius. This decision will be applicable to about 1.08 lakh schools and about 2 crore students. The state Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says its aim is to develop healthy eating habits in children.
These food items will not be sold within 50 meters of schools
According to the new order, high fat, high sugar and high salt (HFSS) foods will no longer be sold on school premises and within 50 meters of it. These include vada pav, samosa, chips, cold drinks, sweet drinks, chocolates, ice creams and other fried snacks.
This rule will be equally applicable to government, private, aided, residential, schools affiliated to CBSE, ICSE, State Board and all other boards. Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Munde said that providing safe and nutritious food to children is the priority of the government under the “Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra” campaign.

Rules changed for school canteen also
Now, valid FSSAI license and registration will be mandatory for school canteens, hostel canteens, PM-nutrition kitchens, Anganwadi centers and all vendors providing food items to schools.
Also, schools will have to install food safety display boards, appoint food safety supervisors, implement “Eat Right School” campaign, ensure clean drinking water, clean kitchens and safe food storage.
Strict action will be taken if rules are broken
FDA has clarified that soon an inspection campaign will be conducted across the state. Notices, suspension or cancellation of licenses, confiscation of food items and legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 can be taken against schools or canteen operators violating the rules.
The government believes that this step will reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases like obesity and diabetes in children as well as promote healthy eating habits.
