PoK Election Violence: Protests are continuing in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) demanding boycott of elections. Meanwhile, local sources and media reports have claimed that many people have died and a large number of people have been injured in the last 24 hours during the action of security forces. There have been reports of violence from the Drake area of Rawalakot, where tension is said to be increasing between the protesters and the security forces.
Many people died, dozens injured
According to sources, at least 20 people have died and more than 50 have been injured in the action of security forces during the last 24 hours. Reports also claimed that the dead included Usman Nazir, who is said to be the brother of Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) core committee member and spokesperson Omar Nazir Kashmiri. It is being told that he was associated with the election boycott campaign. Some reports also claim that a total of 80 people have died since the protests began on June 5. However, these claims have not been independently verified.

Social media influencer’s appeal to the international community
Many videos have surfaced on social media from the area. In some of these videos, scenes like injured people and chaos are seen on the streets. PoK social media influencer Akil Bhai released a video message expressing concern over the situation in the area. He claimed that the situation in Rawalakot is very bad and a large number of people have been affected. He also appealed to the international media and the global community to pay attention and support the issue.
Who is leading the demonstration?
According to reports, the Awami Action Committee (AAC) is leading the election boycott campaign. There have also been allegations that security forces targeted people associated with the protests. However, there is no official response from Pakistan on these allegations.
Security tightened during elections
After the election process started from Monday, security arrangements have been tightened in PoK. According to reports-
- More than 14,000 security personnel were deployed.
- Additional security forces were deployed at many sensitive places.
- There are also reports of snipers being deployed at some places.
- The protesters have been accused of using force.
Internet and mobile services also affected
According to reports, internet and mobile services have been disrupted in many parts of the area. Apart from this, there have also been reports of electricity and water supply being affected in some areas. Local people have expressed displeasure over these measures.
PoK election schedule
Elections for 45 seats in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are being held in three phases till August 10. There are a total of 53 seats in the so-called assembly, which include—
- Direct elections are held on 45 seats.
- 8 seats are reserved for women, technocrats and religious leaders.
