According to the story published in TOI and medium.com, about 200 years ago, Kuldhara used to be a very happy and rich village. People of ‘Paliwal Brahmin’ community lived here, who were very advanced in farming and trade, but one night in the year 1825, something happened which changed the entire history. It is said that till date no scientist or historian has been able to solve the question of where the people of Kuldhara as well as 83 surrounding villages left everything and went away overnight, without making any sound and without leaving any trace.

Why did the villagers have to leave suddenly?
A big story is told behind the villagers fleeing like this overnight. At that time there used to be a Diwan (minister) of the state, Salim Singh. He was extremely cruel and debauched. One day his evil eye fell on the beautiful daughter of the village head. He threatened the villagers that if the girl was not married to him, he would ruin the entire village and impose heavy taxes. To save their daughter’s honor and their own independence, the panchayats of all 84 villages took a big decision overnight to leave their ancestral land. While leaving, the elders of the village gave a terrible curse to this soil that ‘after today, no human being will ever be able to settle at this place.’ The surprising thing is that even after 200 years, this village is still lying deserted and empty.
Why don’t people stay here after 6 pm?
Today this village is under the care of the Archeology Department. The rules here are very strict that every tourist has to go out of the main gate before 6 pm. It is strictly prohibited to stay here at night. People who come here to visit even during the day, say that ‘a strange heaviness is felt in the air of the village. It often seems as if someone is walking nearby, while looking back there is no one. Some people have claimed to hear whispers on the wind, women crying and children running away. However, some experts believe that this is not an affair of ‘ghosts’, but when a strong wind passes through the empty houses of the village, such scary sounds are produced.
