Nvidia Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jensen Huang has said that Taiwan has saved the United States’ semiconductor and computing industries rather than weakening them. Speaking to reporters at the opening ceremony of Taiwan-based Wistron Corp’s first US manufacturing site in Fort Worth, Huang touched on the historic development of the global technology ecosystem, according to a news report by Focus Taiwan.
“Taiwan saved the US semiconductor industry, saved the US computing industry, not the other way around,” Huang was quoted as saying in the news report. The chief executive pointed out that without Taiwan’s contribution, the United States’ chip sector would have been taken over by Japan. He said policymakers in Washington should recognize that business partnerships with Taiwanese enterprises are fundamental to restoring high-tech manufacturing within the United States.
Invest not under any pressure, but willingly
Addressing the motives behind foreign investment, Huang pointed out that Taiwanese firms were voluntarily expanding their operations in the United States. He said these choices stemmed from strategic business decisions and long-standing corporate relationships rather than external pressure. “Taiwan is doing this voluntarily out of its own wisdom, not because there is a gun held to its head,” Huang said, adding that the ongoing cooperation was based on trust.
Huang’s view is completely different from Trump’s claims
Huang did not comment on whether federal and state subsidies influenced Taiwanese companies’ decisions to expand their presence in the United States. According to news reports, although Huang did not mention US President Donald Trump by name, his stance was in sharp contrast to Trump’s repeated claims since 2024 that Taiwan has taken over or “stolen” the US semiconductor industry.
The report said, “Trump repeated this allegation in May, saying in a Fox News interview that Taiwan had ‘stole’ the US chip industry and arguing that previous administrations should have imposed heavier tariffs on Taiwanese semiconductors. Wistron’s new American factory
Huang previously described Taiwan as the world’s most advanced center of electronics manufacturing, noting that the United States should appreciate the investments being made by Taiwanese firms. Wistron’s D1 facility is its first manufacturing facility in the United States and has already begun mass production of Nvidia’s GB300 Grace Blackwell Ultra superchip. The Fort Worth plant is also expected to produce Nvidia’s Vera Rubin superchips in the future. (ANI)
