Indira Ekadashi Vrat Katha (Indira ekadashi ki katha)
According to the legend of Indira Ekadashi, during the Satyuga there was a king named Indrasen who ruled the Mahishmati kingdom. King Indrasen was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. One day when the king was engaged in some work, suddenly Devarshi Narada reached his Raj Sabha. The king welcomed Devarshi Narada very well and also asked the reason for his arrival.
Devarshi Narada said that a few days ago he met King Indrasen’s father in Yamlok, who asked to send a message to his son King Indrasen. The message was that once for some reason, the fast of Ekadashi was fragmented with the king’s father. Due to this sin, he has not yet got liberation and he has to live in Yamlok.
Devarshi Narada further says that he told me that he would tell my son that if he keeps the fast of Ekadashi of Ashwin Krishna Paksha, then I will get freedom from Yamlok. After listening to Narada Muni, King Indrasen observed the fast of Indira Ekadashi, the Ekadashi date of Pitru Paksha.
After fasting Indira Ekadashi, King Indrasen made food to Brahmins and donated cow. It is said that due to the effect of this fast, King Indrasen’s father got freedom from Yamlok and after death, King Indrasen also received Vaikuntha Lok. It is believed that since then the name of this fast was named Indira Ekadashi and by observing this fast, the ancestors attain salvation.
