Most of the women believe that if they consume cold water or any other cold thing then there is problem in blood flow. But is it really so or is it a myth?

Dr. Manini Patel (Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Jaipur) says that the idea that drinking cold water during periods will stop periods or increase pain is a myth. There is no scientific proof for this. Pain and cramps during periods are caused by hormonal changes in the body and contraction of the muscles of the uterus. A hormone called prostaglandin plays a role in this process, which can cause pain by increasing contractions in the uterus.

The most important thing is to stay hydrated

Experts say that it is very important to keep the body hydrated during periods. Drinking adequate amount of water prevents dehydration in the body and can help in reducing problems like fatigue, weakness, headache. Women can drink normal or cold water as per their convenience and choice.

However, every woman’s body is different. Some people may feel heaviness, bloating or mild discomfort in the stomach after drinking cold water. In such a situation, she may prefer to drink lukewarm water. During periods, it is most important to give rest to the body, take a healthy diet and drink enough water.
