Protein is a nutrient which is made up of amino acids. From this, body cells, muscles, skin, hair, nails and many other organs are formed. Besides, it also plays an important role in their repair and proper functioning. But many types of confusions remain regarding its intake. Nowadays one hears a lot that the more protein you eat, the more fit you will be. But the truth is that every good thing has its right quantity and protein is no different from that.

Protein is very important for our body because it builds and repairs muscles. But this does not at all mean that the more protein you eat, the more benefits you will get.

If you are completely healthy then taking a high protein diet for some time is generally considered safe. However, if excessive protein is taken for a long time, especially red meat and processed meat, it can cause problems. Due to this, more saturated fat also goes into the body, which is not considered good for heart health.

Expert opinion on protein intake

People with kidney disease should remain alert- Richa Sharma Sr. (Dietitian and HOD, Dietetics Section, Yatharth Super Specialty Hospital) says that people who already have kidney disease should avoid taking too much protein as it can put additional pressure on the kidneys. It has also been seen in some research that consuming too much animal protein can increase the risk of kidney stones.

It is wrong to focus on high protein- Another mistake people often make. Focus solely on protein and reduce fruits, vegetables, whole grains and pulses. In such a situation, the body starts getting less fiber, vitamins and minerals. Then problems like constipation may also occur and the balance of the entire diet gets disturbed. Experts say that do not just run after eating more protein. Take as much protein as you need according to your age, daily activity and health.

Keep your diet like this- Also, try not to get protein from just one thing. Include different sources like pulses, beans, nuts, dairy, eggs, fish in your diet. Ultimately, good health doesn’t just mean more protein, but a balanced and complete diet.
