The narrow streets of old Lucknow, the daily traffic jams, the long time taken to reach hospitals and the rush hours in the markets may gradually become a thing of the past. This new corridor will especially provide relief to those areas where the road transport system has been facing pressure for years.

The new metro corridor will be 11.16 kilometers long

The proposed East-West corridor of Lucknow Metro will be about 11.16 kilometers long. A total of 12 stations will be built on this route, out of which 7 stations will be underground and 5 will be elevated. Considering the dense population and historical heritage of the old city, a large part of the project has been kept underground, so that the construction work does not harm the old areas. This metro line will start from Charbagh and go till Vasant Kunj. Many important markets, railway stations and medical institutions along the way will be directly connected to the metro network.

Big relief to those going to KGMU and Balrampur Hospital

This new corridor is also considered very important from the point of view of health services. Patients and relatives reaching King George’s Medical University, Balrampur Hospital and Trauma Center can now get relief from getting stuck in traffic jams.

In areas of old Lucknow where ambulances cannot reach on time, metro will emerge as a faster option. Areas like Medical College, Chowk, Aminabad and Thakurganj see movement of lakhs of people every day. In such a situation, the metro network will strengthen the local transport system.

Charbagh will become the biggest interchange hub of the capital

Charbagh Railway Station will be the most important center of this new project. Here the existing North-South Corridor and the new East-West Corridor will connect. Passengers will not have to come out of the station to catch another line. According to transport experts, this model will be developed like Rajiv Chowk Metro Station of Delhi, where lakhs of passengers easily change lines every day. This will make metro travel more convenient in Lucknow also.

Work done on changed routes and new DPR

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation has prepared the revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) of this project. Changes were made in the earlier proposed route, so that more populated areas and traffic affected areas could be better connected.

According to UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar, pre-civil construction works are being expedited. The work of removing electric poles, wires and other obstructions has started. The government claims that this project will give a new direction to the traffic management of the capital.

Help will be provided from central government and foreign investment agencies

After getting approval from the state cabinet, the project will be sent to the Ministry of Urban Housing and Development of the Central Government. After this the approval of Public Investment Board (PIB) will be taken. According to sources, talks are also going on with foreign funding agencies like European Investment Bank for the project, so that there is no financial hindrance in the construction work and the project can be completed within the stipulated time.

Big plan for Lucknow Metro expansion by 2047

170 km long orbital rail network will be built in Lucknow

Along with metro expansion, Yogi government is also working on orbital rail network to connect Lucknow and surrounding districts. This project will connect six districts including Lucknow, Kanpur, Unnao and Barabanki. The Central Government has approved Rs 7500 crore for this 170 kilometer long network. Railway stations like Piparsand, Amausi, Alamnagar, Transportnagar, Utretiya, Mohanlalganj, Malihabad and Itaunja will be connected to it. The government aims to complete this project by the year 2031.

What will change in Lucknow?

The old part of Lucknow has been struggling with the pressure of traffic, disorganized public transport and increasing population for a long time. After the commencement of the East-West Metro Corridor, access from Charbagh to areas like Aminabad, Chowk, Medical College and Thakurganj will become easier.

People believe that this project will not only reduce travel time but will also give impetus to the economic activities of Old Lucknow. Access to markets will be easier, medical facilities will be faster and pollution will also be affected due to reduced dependence on private vehicles. This project can become the biggest basis of urban development for the capital in the coming years.
