Amidst the taunts of the society, the pain of loneliness and the compulsions of old age, 65-year-old Chapat Manjhi and 62-year-old Asha Devi decided to hold each other’s hands. Both of them got married in the temple without caring about the villagers. Now this unique love story has become the center of discussion on social media and in the entire area.
The story of affinity started from the neighborhood
According to the people of the village, the houses of Chapat Manjhi and Asha Devi are opposite to each other. Both knew each other for many years. Both of them were living as each other’s support for the last one year. Gradually, the intimacy between them increased and they started living together like husband and wife. However, a round of discussions started in the village regarding this. Various kinds of things started happening especially among women. Tired of daily taunts and social pressure, both of them finally decided to name their relationship marriage.

On Saturday, both of them got married with traditional customs at Mahadev Simaria temple located near the village. Local people were also present during the wedding. This marriage, which took place at this stage of age, has become a topic of discussion in the entire area. In the viral video on social media, elderly bride and groom are seen garlanding each other. Many people are calling it an example of true companionship and emotional support, while some people are linking it to social traditions.
“She became the support in loneliness.”
After marriage, Chapat Manjhi told that his wife had died about 15 years ago. He said that this is his fourth marriage and his first three wives have passed away.
According to Chapat Manjhi, his son and daughter-in-law work outside. In such a situation, it had become very difficult to live alone in old age. He said that it was Asha Devi who helped him in times of illness and daily needs. He told, “It was very difficult to live alone at this age. There were problems in everything from eating and drinking to illness. Asha Devi always took care of me, from there the bond between us grew.”
“Daughter did not cooperate, hence support was needed”
At the same time, Asha Devi told that her husband had died two years ago. She has a daughter, but she did not take care of her. He said that it had become difficult to live life in loneliness. Both of them came closer to each other while helping Chapat Manjhi with his illness and household chores. However, people in the village had started talking about it. Asha Devi said, “Now after marriage, we have got social and legal support. At least now people will not point fingers.”
Son and daughter-in-law expressed their displeasure
Chapat Manjhi’s son Ajay Manjhi and some family members are said to be angry with this marriage. The son says that marrying at this age gives a wrong message to the society and the family will no longer keep both of them with them. However, many people of the village have also come out in support of the elderly couple. The villagers say that since both of them have married of their own free will, they should get the right to live a life with dignity.
