Indian worker killed, three injured in Ukrainian drone attack near Moscow

New Delhi: One Indian worker lost his life while three others were injured in a drone attack in Russia’s Moscow region on Sunday, the Indian Embassy in Russia said. In a post on X, the embassy said its officials visited the location of the attack and also met the injured workers at the hospital.

“One Indian worker has lost his life, and three others have been injured in a drone attack in the Moscow region earlier today. Embassy officials have visited the location and met the injured workers in the hospital. The Embassy condoles the loss of life and is working with the company management and local authorities to provide necessary assistance to the workers,” the embassy said.

Massive drone attack on Moscow

Russian authorities said the drone strikes formed part of one of the biggest Ukrainian attacks on Moscow in more than a year. According to Reuters, at least three people died and 12 others suffered injuries in separate drone attacks linked to the overnight offensive.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the “technology” at Moscow’s oil refinery was not damaged during the strikes. However, three houses reportedly suffered damage. Sobyanin also said Russian forces shot down more than 120 drones over the previous 24 hours.

Russia claims hundreds of drones downed

Russia’s defence ministry claimed that air defence systems destroyed 556 drones across the country overnight and into Sunday morning, including drones targeting the Moscow region.

The ministry said the attack represented one of Ukraine’s largest recent drone offensives against the Russian capital.

Zelensky calls strike “entirely justified”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky defended the drone attack and described it as retaliation against Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities.

“Our responses to Russia’s prolongation of the war and its attacks on our cities and communities are entirely justified. This time, Ukrainian long-range sanctions reached the Moscow region, and we are clearly telling the Russians: their state must end its war,” Zelensky wrote on social media.

The latest escalation comes as drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine continues to intensify, with both sides increasingly targeting infrastructure and strategic regions far from the frontline.
