Lakkundi Excavation: Discovery of 100 temples and 100 wells, more than 3000 treasures recovered from the ground

So far, 32 temples, 36 wells and more than 3,000 archaeological artefacts have been found in the ongoing excavations at Lakkundi in Gadag district of Karnataka. The Karnataka government has set a target of including this place in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

So far, 32 temples and 36 wells have been discovered in Lakkundi in Gadag district, while 68 temples and 64 wells are yet to be excavated. Tourism Minister HK Patil said the excavation work will begin soon and the officials concerned have been directed to complete the process by the end of December this year.At a press conference at Vidhana Soudha on Saturday, HK Patil said Lakkundi is famous as the place of 100 temples and 100 wells. He said that the state government is taking steps to save this rich heritage. Under this, excavation has been going on for the last two years, in which so far 32 temples and 36 wells have been found. Now instructions have been given to start excavation to find the remaining structures.In the last one year, more than 3,000 archaeological artefacts have been found from Lakkundi. The special thing is that in the last 12 days alone, about 1,500 artefacts were discovered. Apart from this, the villagers of Lakkundi have also handed over more than 1,500 archaeological items to the authorities. Officials said further excavations will be carried out and necessary steps will be taken to save more remains.Lakkundi has ruins and architectural remains of the Hoysala Empire, Chalukya Dynasty and Vijayanagara Empire. Efforts are underway to discover and preserve these historic structures. An open museum will also be built for their conservation, for which necessary land has been allotted. It was also reported that a proposal would be sent to UNESCO to include Lakkundi in the list of World Heritage Sites.
