Cricket is the most popular sport in India. Every player dreams of representing the Indian national team. However, not every player gets that opportunity, leading some to pursue careers with associate nations. Smita Patel is one such Indian player who is currently part of the USA cricket team.
Born on May 16, 1993, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Smita’s full name is Smita Kamleshbhai Patel. He is a right-handed batsman and also plays as a wicketkeeper.
From a young age, Smita aspired to build a career in cricket and worked hard to achieve that dream. His efforts paid off when he made his first-class debut for the Gujarat cricket team in 2012. That year was pivotal for Smita, as he was part of the Indian team that won the Under-19 World Cup under the captaincy of Unmukt Chand. In the final against Australia, Smita scored 62 runs, playing a crucial role in securing the championship for India. This performance catapulted him to fame overnight.
Despite his success, Smita’s ultimate goal was to play for India. He remained active in Indian domestic cricket until 2021 but never received a call-up to the national team. Having played for Gujarat, Tripura, and Goa, Smita decided to retire from all forms of BCCI-affiliated cricket in 2021 to pursue his dream of playing for the USA cricket team.
After retiring, Smita moved to the USA, where he got the chance to play at the national level. He made his debut for the USA against Canada in 2024 and has been a consistent member of the team since. Primarily seen in One Day Internationals, Smita has scored 727 runs in 21 innings, including one century and four half-centuries, with an unbeaten high score of 152.
As he approaches his 33rd birthday, Smita Patel continues to chase his dream of playing high-level cricket, now representing the USA.
