Big decision of Siddaramaiah government, changed school uniform rules, hijab controversy heated up again. Karnataka Hijab Rule School Uniform Order Revoked Sacred Thread Guidelines 2026

Karnataka hijab controversy again took a big turn! The government canceled the Uniform Order of 2022 and approved hijab, sacred thread, Rudraksha and religious symbols in schools. BJP and VHP described it as a “new political storm”, while the government is calling it a victory for education, equality and constitutional rights. The case pending in the Supreme Court is now in the headlines again.

Karnataka School Uniform Rules: Once again there has been a major earthquake in the politics and education system of Karnataka. The Siddaramaiah government has officially withdrawn the controversial Uniform Dress Code order issued in the year 2022 during the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule. With this historic decision, students in government, aided and private schools as well as pre-university colleges of the state will now be able to wear symbols of religious and traditional identity along with their prescribed uniform.

Will the picture of the classroom change again? Suspense of new rules

The new order of the government has abolished the strict instructions in which uniform without any religious symbol was mandatory. Now students will be able to wear religious symbols like Hijab, Turban, Janeu, Rudraksh, Shivdhara and Pita in the school premises. However, the government has put a subtle ‘catch’ in it. According to the order, these symbols can be worn only if they do not have any negative impact on discipline, safety or student identification. This condition may pose a new challenge to the school administration as to how they will walk the fine line between ‘discipline’ and ‘religious faith’.

Education Minister’s emotional argument: “A child’s tear changed the policy”

A poignant incident is said to be the reason behind this major policy change. Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa revealed that recently on April 24, a student was forced to remove his sacred thread (Janeu), leaving the student and his family in deep shock. Bangarappa made it clear that religious rituals, be it earrings or hijab, should not become a barrier between a child’s education and future. The government stressed that no student will now be denied access to exams or classrooms because of these symbols.

Political chessboard: Will there be another battle between ‘saffron shawl’ vs ‘hijab’?

As soon as this order became public, the stir in the opposition camp intensified. BJP MLA Bharat Shetty called it a move to divert attention from the government’s failures. At the same time, leaders of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have said in a warning tone that if hijab is allowed, then Hindu students should also be allowed to wear saffron shawls. Recall that the 2022 controversy started with the same saffron shawl and hijab conflict. Now the question is, will this new order bring peace or will it reopen old wounds?

Constitutional decorum and court complications: what will happen next?

The Government of Karnataka has used the powers of the Karnataka Education Act, 1983 to make this change. The government argues that schools are not just centers of learning, but ‘constitutional places’ where diversity should be respected. However, the hijab case is still pending in the Supreme Court. The government has tried to strike this balance after studying the dress code of Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs). Strict instructions have been given to the officials to implement this order in a ‘secular and neutral’ manner, so that no child faces discrimination.
