New Delhi: Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s impressive show with the bat and pacer Nahid Rana’s fifer on Day 5 helped Bangladesh thrash Pakistan by 104 runs in the first Test of the ongoing two-match series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Tuesday, May 12. Bangladesh recorded their first-ever Test win against Pakistan at home, making it three wins in a row against Shan Masood’s men in the whites overall.
Chasing 268 runs in their fourth innings on the final day of the Test match, Pakistan were in the contest heading into the final session with 152 runs required and seven wickets in hand. Pakistan had a set batter at the crease in Abdullah Fazal, who had reached his half-century before the final session.
However, the visitors collapsed in the final session of play on Day 5 as pace sensation ran riot with the ball. Taijul Islman trapped half-centurion Fazal lbw on 66 before Rana dismissed the likes of Masood, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Rizwan and Noman Ali to run through the Pakistani batting line-up.
He removed Shaheen Afridi on a duck in the 53rd over of Pakistan’s innings to complete his fifer and wrap up a historic win for Bangladesh in Dhaka. Rana finished with excellent figures of 5/40 off his 9.5 overs to help Bangladesh bundle out Pakistan for a paltry 163 runs in their second innings and wrap up a thumping victory by 104 runs.
Bangladesh had not beaten Pakistan in a Test match until 2024, but have now managed three wins in a row against the visitors in the longest format. Their 104-run victory in Dhaka on Tuesday was Bangladesh’s first against Pakistan on home soil.
