One night Vajradhwaj treacherously killed King Mahidhwaj. After the murder he buried the king’s body under a Peepal tree in the forest. Due to his untimely death, the king’s soul did not find peace and started wandering in a ghostly form.

The soul of King Mahidhwaj started living on the same Peepal tree and started troubling the people passing by there. One day sage Dhaumya was passing through the same path. With the power of his penance he saw that soul and knew the reason for his suffering.

Sage Dhaumya observed a fast on Apara Ekadashi to liberate the soul of the king. After completing the fast, he dedicated his virtue to the soul of King Mahidhwaj. Due to the influence of this virtue, the king was freed from the ghostly form and reached heaven. There he got salvation by the grace of Lord Vishnu.
