Who is Sonika Gill?
Sonika grew up in Delhi and learned classical dance. She moved to Mumbai and did small roles for nearly ten years in films like Nazrana Pyar Ka and Prem Geet. Her schoolmate back in Delhi was singer Sonu Nigam. She established herself in Bollywood during the late 1980s and early 1990s through her work in over 45 films.
How did Sonika start her career?
Before getting noticed in Bollywood, Sonika trained in classical dance and acted in small film roles for several years while struggling to establish herself. She got cast in Ram Lakhan. People noticed her. After that, filmmaker Subhash Ghai offered her a three film contract.
What happened during the accident?
In 1992, Sonika met with a serious car accident that fractured her leg and forced her to stay away from films during an important phase of her career. Because of the accident, she lost the film Khalnayak, and the role later went to Ramya Krishnan.
Why did Sonika move to Dubai?
Her brother was shot. Her career had slowed down. She moved to Dubai and worked as a manager at a restaurant. When it shut down, she came back to India. She appeared in My Friend Ganesha 3 and a few other films.
What about marriage?
She avoided marriage for years fearing it would affect her career. Many engagements were called off. After 40, she married builder Mitesh Rughani. They have a daughter. She lives with her husband, his first wife, and her two stepsons.
