New Delhi [भारत]July 21 (ANI): Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was on Tuesday shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital following an order by the Delhi High Court. The High Court had directed him to immediately transfer him to a private hospital of his choice.
The High Court has directed Wangchuk to follow the medical advice and treatment protocol prescribed by the doctors of Medanta Hospital.
Earlier in the day, passing its formal order on an appeal filed by Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali Angmo, a division bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia recorded Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s submission that the Center has no objection to Wangchuk being shifted to Medanta.
“Considering the above facts, we direct that Sonam Wangchuk be immediately shifted to Medanta Hospital,” the bench ordered.
High Court gave instructions to form a team of doctors
The High Court also directed the Director of Medanta Hospital to form a team of doctors to oversee Wangchuk’s treatment and administer medication as per accepted medical norms and protocols.
The court directed that Wangchuk will follow the treatment and medical advice of the medical team constituted by the hospital.
The order came after the bench examined the medical reports and interacted with doctors from AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital and the team treating Wangchuk, which reached a consensus that he needed constant hospital monitoring.
Wangchuk had accused police surveillance
During the hearing, senior advocate Akhil Sibal, appearing for Angmo, argued that Wangchuk’s vital parameters were stable and he was taking oral rehydration while continuing his hunger strike.
He also referred to a letter written by Wangchuk, alleging that he was under police surveillance inside Safdarjung Hospital and was not allowed to use his mobile phone.
The bench said there is also a need to consider the concerns expressed by Wangchuk in his letter, as well as the consensus that he should remain under constant medical observation.
Center also agreed
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that the Center had no objection to transferring Wangchuk to Medanta, calling it a reputed hospital.
However, he stressed that Wangchuk should remain under constant medical observation and should not leave the hospital against medical advice.
He argued that any decision to discharge Wangchuk should depend on the doctors at Medanta and not on Wangchuk himself.
Accepting this plea, the bench directed that Wangchuk be immediately shifted to Medanta.
The court also ordered that all medical records, investigation reports and treatment documents prepared at Safdarjung Hospital be made available to Medanta so that there is continuity in treatment.
With these directions, the division bench disposed of the appeal filed against the single judge’s order refusing to allow Wangchuk to be shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to a private hospital of his choice.
Sonam Wangchuk is on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 to protest against exam irregularities and NEET-UG paper leak.
