LPG Rate Hikes: Neither Maharashtra, nor Uttar Pradesh, which state provides maximum LPG to the country?

LPG is produced in select states of India.

The prices of LPG increased on the very first day of the beginning of the month of May. The price of commercial LPG cylinder (19kg) has been increased by Rs 993 and that of 5 kg cylinder by Rs 261. Some time ago the prices of domestic LPG cylinders were also increased. After the gas crisis that arose between Iran and the Israel-America war, the government had announced that 60 percent of the gas required in India is being produced in the country. Earlier this figure was 40 percent.

Now amid the increase in gas prices, the question arises that where is the center of LPG production in India and which states are at the forefront in producing it.

LPG stronghold in India

After the gas crisis, the government decided to increase its production in the country. New government figures show that LPG consumption in the entire year in 2025-26 stood at 33.21 million tonnes (MT). The largest part of LPG requirement in India comes from Qatar. Apart from this, Australia and America are the countries from where India imports gas.

LPG is produced only in the cities of some selected states of India. These include Vadodara, Mathura, Panipat and Haldia. But Gujarat is the state which is at the forefront in this matter. Jamnagar of Gujarat is said to be the largest LPG producer. The world’s largest refining complex of Reliance Industries Limited is in Jamnagar. This refinery produces large quantities of LPG along with petrol, diesel and other petroleum products. This is the reason why Jamnagar has become the energy center of India.

LPG is made from crude oil and natural gas.

How is LPG made?

LPG is made in two ways. First, by purifying crude oil and second, by processing natural gas. When crude oil is heated, many different products are formed from it. LPG is made during that time. It is collected and stored in tanks and then filled in cylinders and delivered to consumers.

The use of LPG in India is not limited to homes only. It is also used in restaurants, hotels, industries and vehicles. Due to having very little pollution, it is considered safer and environment friendly as compared to other traditional fuels.

How much consumption in the country?

This year, LPG consumption was 3.012 metric tons in January and 2.822 metric tons in February, which decreased to 2.379 metric tons in March, i.e. there was a decline of 26.6% as compared to January. In the present times the supply of LPG is being affected. Supply of LPG for domestic use has been given priority. According to government data, no report of LPG shortage has been received from LPG distributors. Last week there was an increase of 98% in LPG cylinder booking. To prevent fraud, Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) based deliveries have increased by more than 94%. DAC is received on the registered mobile number of the consumer.
