RBI Credit Card Rules: The Reserve Bank of India has given great relief to credit card users. Now even after the due date of the bill has passed, customers will not have to pay late fees immediately. RBI has announced to give additional time of three days under the new rules. This decision will provide relief to lakhs of customers who sometimes are not able to pay their bills on time. Besides, the calculation of late fees has also been made more transparent and easier than before.
You will get three days’ time even after the due date
According to the new rule of RBI, late fees will not be charged as soon as the due date of the credit card bill comes. Customers will be given an additional grace period of three days. For example, if your bill due date is April 5, you can pay until April 8 without any extra charges. This change will prove to be very useful for those people who are unable to make payments on time due to busyness or technical reasons. This will avoid unnecessary penalties and provide some additional relief to customers.
Understand the new mathematics of late fees
RBI has also changed the method of calculating late fees. Now the penalty will not be imposed on the entire bill, but only on the outstanding amount. This will reduce additional financial burden on customers. Suppose you have paid some part of the bill, then late fee will be charged only on the remaining amount. However, if payment is not made even after the grace period of three days, it will be considered outstanding. In such a situation, your credit score may be affected, so it will still be very important to make payments on time.
Relief will be available even in natural disaster
RBI has also taken a big step for the customers affected by natural disasters. Now banks will not have to wait for the customer’s application to provide relief. Banks will be able to provide necessary assistance to the affected customers on their own initiative. This rule will come into effect from July 1, 2026. At the same time, the new rules related to credit cards will be effective from April 1, 2027. Apart from this, RBI has also issued a draft of changes in the guidelines of Kisan Credit Card Scheme. Suggestions have been sought from the general public and concerned parties on this.
