According to ancient stories, once Lord Indra and other gods lost their power due to the curse of sage Durvasa. Then, to regain their lost power and heaven, the gods and demons decided to churn the ocean together. For this churning, Mandarachal mountain was made a churner and Vasuki serpent was made a rope. As soon as the churning started, Mount Mandarachal started sinking into the depths of the sea, because it was not getting any support from below. In this critical situation the gods remembered Lord Vishnu. Then the Lord took the form of a huge tortoise and held the mountain on his back. With the help of God, the churning of the ocean was completed and the world got precious gems.
