According to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Calcium Carbide can be used illegally to ripen fruits like papaya quickly, which is completely banned. This chemical comes in contact with moisture and releases a gas that artificially ripens the fruit, but it may contain harmful elements like arsenic and phosphorus. According to FSSAI, such adulteration spoils the quality of the fruit. Due to which eating it for a long time can cause harm to health. Therefore, it is important to identify real and fake fruits before eating them.
