Delhi weather update: Light rainfall and dust storms to give respite from heatwave; IMD issues yellow alert

New Delhi: After a stretch of relentless heat that saw temperatures soaring past the 44-degree mark, people in Delhi-NCR will experience temporary relief from the prevailing heat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Monday night and also predicted light rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds that could offer a much-needed break from the heatwave in the region.

According to the advisory issued at 7 pm on April 27 wind speeds of 30-40 kmph are expected. While it might only be a drizzle or light rain for the capital but it will definitely mark a significant shift from the extreme heat which has engulfed the region in last few days.

The weather is not only getting intense in Delhi but also in the neighbouring regions as parts of Haryana including Rewari, Palwal, and Nuh, are likely to see dust storms followed by moderate rainfall and lightning.

Turbulent Tuesday for North and East India

While Monday set to get some local relief in night, Tuesday tends to shape up to be much more chaotic across a larger part of the country. Infact Monday saw some record-breaking figures with Akola in Maharashtra hitting a massive 46.9°C, the highest in the country so far. However, the forecast for April 28 suggests the heat’s grip is finally loosening in the North.

The IMD predicts that thunderstorms with violent winds reaching up to 70 kmph will sweep through Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Bihar. In the hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the situation might get even more intense with hailstorms predicted alongside the rain.

Meanwhile, the Northeast and East India remain the most active weather zones with states like Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall. For those living along the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal, have been advised by the authorities especially fisherman to stay out of the sea until May 2.

What to expect next

There is finally some light at the end of the tunnel for those exhausted by the sun as between April 28 and May 1, temperatures across Northwest India are expected to drop by 3 degrees Celsius to 5 degrees Celsius.

Well, while the North cools down, pockets of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Telangana will still have to deal with lingering heatwaves.
