Mumbai: Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra’s film Toaster is now streaming on Netflix. Directed by Vivek Daschaudary, the comedy-drama also marks Patralekhaa’s debut as a producer. In an exclusive conversation with News9Live, the filmmaker spoke about the film, his collaboration with the cast, and working closely with Rajkummar and Patralekhaa. Here is the full interview.
What was the starting point for Toaster?
The script was first shared with Rajkummar Rao, who wanted to begin his home production journey with the project. Later, the team approached Vivek Daschaudary to direct the film. The director shared that he instantly connected with the script, which eventually brought everyone together.
How did the streaming format influence the storytelling compared to a theatrical release?
Vivek explained that the essence of storytelling remains unchanged across platforms. However, streaming services allow films to reach a much wider audience. Since comedy has universal appeal, Netflix was keen to support the project.
Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra are known for realistic performances. What did they bring to the film?
The director praised both actors for their preparation and deep understanding of their characters. According to him, Rajkummar and Sanya are keen observers of everyday life, which helped them shape their performances naturally. He added that working with them made the entire process much smoother.

How was Patralekhaa as a producer?
Vivek said he has known both Rajkummar and Patralekhaa for years, which created a strong sense of comfort on set. He appreciated Patralekhaa’s planning and management skills, noting that the production remained organised and efficient throughout.
Does the title Toaster hold any deeper symbolism?
The filmmaker revealed that the title was chosen for its quirky and memorable quality. He also pointed out that using a toaster worked practically during filming, as it was easy to carry around. At the same time, the idea of someone wanting their wedding gift toaster returned added a humorous layer to the story.
Does the film focus on Indian middle-class anxieties or broader human relationships?
Vivek believes the film’s themes are universal. While Indian audiences may relate more closely to the situations, he hopes viewers across the world will connect with its emotions and humour.
What do you want audiences to take away from the film?
The director said the primary aim of Toaster is to entertain. He hopes audiences enjoy the humour, have a good time watching it, and continue discussing it afterwards.
How did the guest appearances by Patralekhaa and Pratik Gandhi happen?
Vivek shared that Patralekhaa suited the cameo perfectly due to the meta reference attached to the role. The team also wanted a recognisable face for the special appearance, and Pratik Gandhi readily agreed to be part of the film.
Why was Archana Puran Singh chosen for the role of Malini?
The team wanted someone who would surprise viewers. Vivek felt that Archana Puran Singh brought an unexpected dimension to the role and showcased a side of her acting that audiences had not seen before.
How did Farah Khan’s appearance come about?
The director credited Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa for bringing Farah Khan onboard. Since they have known her for many years, they approached her for the role of Nandini, and she agreed to make a friendly appearance in the film.
