Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed has signed a three-year contract extension valued at $50.25 million, which includes $20 million guaranteed.
The deal was confirmed by his agents, Drew Rosenhaus and Ian Grutman, with ESPN first reporting the news.
Reed, who will turn 26 on Tuesday, was set to enter the final year of his rookie contract this season. The 2023 second-round pick from Michigan State has made significant contributions over his first three seasons, totaling 138 receptions for 1,857 yards and 15 touchdowns, alongside 310 rushing yards and three additional touchdowns.
Performance and Injury History
Reed’s performance last season was impacted by a shoulder injury that limited him to just seven games. He recorded 19 receptions for 207 yards and one touchdown, in addition to three carries for 28 yards. The injury occurred during a diving touchdown catch that was nullified by a penalty in a game against the Washington Commanders on September 11. Following the injury, Reed underwent surgeries on his shoulder and foot, returning to play on December 7.
Career Achievements
Before his injury, Reed made history as the first player in NFL history to achieve at least 750 receiving yards, 55 catches, six touchdown receptions, 100 rushing yards, and a rushing touchdown in each of his first two seasons. He also became the first wide receiver for the Packers to surpass 900 yards from scrimmage in both of his initial seasons.
Offseason Changes for the Packers
This contract extension comes at a time when the Packers have seen a reduction in their receiving depth. Notably, 2022 fourth-round pick Romeo Doubs signed with the New England Patriots, and 2023 fifth-round selection Dontayvion Wicks was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. Doubs led the Packers last season with 55 receptions for 724 yards, while his six touchdown catches were tied for the team lead.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed interest in negotiating an extension with Christian Watson, who is also entering the final year of his contract. The Packers acquired a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft and a sixth-round selection for Wicks, who contributed 30 catches for 332 yards and two touchdowns last season.
General Manager’s Comments
Brian Gutekunst praised Reed, stating, “He’s a winning football player. Obviously he missed some time last year, but when he’s on the field, we’re a better football team. There’s no doubt about it.” This sentiment reflects the team’s reliance on Reed’s abilities to enhance their performance on the field.
