Film industry’s connection surfaces in Mumbai’s NESCO drug case; actress’ role under scanner

New Delhi: The investigation into the death of two MBA students at a music concert in Mumbai, allegedly due to a drug overdose, has taken an unexpected turn, with the police probing a possible film industry connection. The students who had attended a music event at the NESCO Centre in Mumbai’s Goregaon died allegedly due to a drug overdose on the night of April 11.

The Vanrai police on Wednesday arrested one Jia Jacob in connection with the case. Jacob works as a supporting actor in the film industry. Besides playing supporting roles in movies, she is also into modelling, according to sources.

Transactions worth lakhs

It was also found during the probe that Jia Jacob’s bank account details showed transactions worth lakhs of rupees. It is suspected that these amounts were transferred into her account by other accused individuals involved in the NESCO drug case.

The police suspect that Jacob may also be involved in the supply of narcotics. She is currently being interrogated, and investigative agencies anticipate that her questioning could lead to several major revelations, police said.

The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the entire matter, and a search is currently underway for other individuals linked to this racket.

What happened at Goregaon NESCO music concert

Last week, two MBA students, including a woman, died, and another woman was hospitalised due to suspected drug overdose during a music concert at the Goregaon NESCO Exhibition Centre in the western suburbs. They were part of a group of 15 students who attended the concert.

Police found that the students who died had taken more than one pill of the banned popular party drug ‘ecstasy’ (MDMA). The three students allegedly complained of breathlessness and were rushed to nearby hospitals. The 24-year-old woman and the 28-year-old man later died during the treatment, while the 25-year-old woman recovered later.

The probe revealed that the drugs were brought from outside Mumbai and were supplied at the music concert through the Porter courier service app.

More than 10 people, including the event organiser and two students, have been arrested in connection with the incident so far.
