Ravana’s funeral rites
Valmiki Ramayana: It is told in Valmiki Ramayana that after the death of Ravana, there was darkness all around in Lanka. It was said about him that he chose the path of unrighteousness. Despite this irreligious path, he was a great scholar and devotee of Shiva. According to Valmiki Ramayana, when Ravana was killed, his brother Vibhishana refused to perform the last rites, but Lord Rama preached religion to Vibhishana and honored him as a great warrior. Through this incident Lord Rama gave this great message to the world that “death ends enmity”.
After Ravana’s death, Shri Ram requested Vibhishan to perform the last rites of Ravana, but Vibhishan clearly refused. He argued that Ravana was a sinner who kidnapped a stranger’s woman and was unrighteous. Being a brother, he could not perform the last rites for such a person. Then Rama said to Vibhishana, “With death the enmity ends. Our task is complete. Ravana is your brother, like mine. He was a great hero and a scholar of the Vedas so his last rites should be performed with due respect.” Understanding the dharma implicit in Rama’s words, Vibhishana finally agreed.
Ravana’s funeral was conducted with great pomp as per the royal customs of Lanka. A special pyre decorated with sandalwood, spices and garlands was prepared. Amidst the chanting of Vedic mantras by the Brahmins, Vibhishana performed the last rites as per the scriptures. Ravana’s wife Mandodari and other women of Lanka were also present in this ceremony and they bid farewell to Ravana. Ram attended the funeral along with his monkey army and expressed his respect for Ravana.

Chanting Ram’s name at the time of death
It is said that Ravana had chanted the name Ram three times before taking his last breath. As an atonement for his sins, he chanted the name of God to attain salvation. It is said in the scriptures that by chanting the name of Ram, the soul gets salvation, that is why scholars believe that Ravana’s soul attained salvation after death. The scene of Ravana’s funeral shows us the great qualities of Lord Rama. Ram demonstrated the principle of hating the mistakes of the individual, not the person. This historical scene is a mirror of humanity and religion.
