WhatsApp Plus spotted on Android, paid features rollout begins

New Delhi: A new paid layer is quietly making its way into WhatsApp, and it is not what many users expected. The company has started testing an optional subscription called WhatsApp Plus, aimed at users who want more control and customisation in the app.

The rollout is slow for now. Only a limited number of Android users can see it inside settings. The update was first spotted by WaBetaInfo, which has been tracking early feature tests across WhatsApp builds.

WhatsApp Plus begins limited rollout on Android

WhatsApp Plus is not a replacement for the free app. Messaging, calls, and core features remain unchanged. The company is keeping its base experience free for everyone, and that part stays protected with end-to-end encryption.

The new plan adds extra features on top. It is optional. If you do not subscribe, nothing changes in your daily use. That is something I noticed many users were worried about, but the update clears it.

What extra features users get with WhatsApp Plus

The subscription focuses mainly on personalisation and convenience. Users who opt in can access:

  • New sticker packs with animated effects
  • Up to 20 pinned chats instead of 3
  • Around 18 new theme colours for the app
  • Custom app icons with different styles
  • Exclusive ringtones for calls

There is also a feature where settings can be applied across multiple chats at once. For people who manage a lot of conversations, this could save time.

WhatsApp Plus: Pricing and availability details

The pricing is still being tested across regions. Early screenshots show around €2.49 per month in Europe. In some markets, it is listed as PKR 229 and around $29 in Mexico, which roughly converts to ₹2,610.

Billing works on a monthly cycle with auto-renewal. Users can cancel anytime through the Play Store.

WhatsApp is still experimenting with this plan. More features may be added later based on feedback. For now, it is limited to Android users, with iOS support expected later.
