Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding immediate intervention on the proposal to demolish 38 out of 40 buildings of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University located in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh.
In his letter, Jha has said that demolishing a functioning university imparting education to around 3,000 students would be tantamount to destroying an educational institution established under state law. He argued that any alleged irregularities related to the approval of buildings should be resolved through legal and regulatory measures rather than large-scale demolition.
Action ‘extreme’ and ‘politically motivated’
The MP said that the Supreme Court has always emphasized on due process, proportionality and accountability in cases related to demolition. He described the proposed action as “grossly excessive” and questioned its proportionality, alleging that it appeared to be politically motivated.
‘The country’s global image will be harmed’
Jha also warned that demolishing much of the university’s infrastructure would damage India’s global image and weaken its commitment to education, equality and rule of law. He said turning classrooms, libraries and laboratories into debris would send a negative message internationally.
Urging the Prime Minister to advise the Uttar Pradesh government to suspend the demolition order, Jha called for a legal process aimed at preserving the university. He emphasized that the political affiliation of the founder of the institution should not determine the future of an educational institution or its students.
