Uttarakhand: Online biryani order sparks clash in Rudrapur; shop owner allegedly got registered in Hindu name

Rudrapur: What began as a routine online food order soon escalated into a heated dispute in Rudrapur.

A young man from Bhadaipura ordered chicken biryani through a food delivery app from a restaurant listed as “Saurabh Biryani.” However, when the delivery arrived, the food came from a Muslim-owned shop near Trishul Chowk, sparking protests from local groups.

Customer’s complaint and protest

The customer claimed he tried to cancel the order after realizing the restaurant’s location did not match the app listing, but the cancellation failed. When the delivery person arrived, the young man refused to accept the biryani and went to the shop with his friends. Soon, members of a cow protection group joined them, and the situation grew tense.

Police intervention

Local police reached the spot to control the situation. Inspector-in-charge Manoj Raturi spoke with both parties and brought the shop owner to the police station for questioning. The police said the matter was being investigated to determine whether the restaurant had registered under a false name to attract customers.

Investigation begins

Rudrapur Kotwali SSI Anil Joshi confirmed that the police had received a complaint from Hindu leaders alleging that the restaurant’s registration name was misleading. He said, “We are investigating the matter based on the complaint. Further action will be taken according to the facts that emerge.”

Maintaining peace and order

The police emphasized that no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands. Officers pacified both sides and urged residents to maintain peace. “Our priority is to ensure harmony and prevent any communal tension,” SSI Joshi added.

Social media reaction

The incident quickly spread on social media, with users debating whether the restaurant’s name was intentionally misleading or simply a business choice. Some posts called for stricter verification of restaurant registrations on food delivery platforms to avoid such misunderstandings.

Community concerns

Local residents expressed concern that such disputes could disturb the city’s peace. Many urged people to verify facts before reacting and to avoid spreading rumors online. Officials also reminded citizens that business registration and food delivery listings are regulated by company policies and government rules, and any violation should be reported through proper channels.
