Despite the T20 World Cup win, captain Suryakumar Yadav’s position is in danger due to his poor form. BCCI is considering a new captain keeping in mind the goals of 2028. The upcoming England-Ireland tour will be decisive for his future.
Mumbai: Despite making India the champion by winning the T20 World Cup, captain Suryakumar Yadav’s position is said to be in danger. According to reports, Suryakumar’s poor batting form has forced BCCI and the selection committee to think again. BCCI now wants to prepare the team keeping in mind the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 World Cup, in which a question mark has been raised on Suryakumar’s place.
Being out for zero against New Zealand in the World Cup final and scoring only 11 runs against England in the semi-final proved to be a big setback for Suryakumar. Except for the first group match against America, 35-year-old Surya did not play in any major match of the tournament. Suryakumar will be 37 years old by the 2028 Olympics and World Cup. In view of this, BCCI is seriously considering the search for a new captain, as reported by news agency PTI. If Suryakumar is replaced, Sanju Samson can also be considered a contender for captaincy. Although Shubman Gill is BCCI’s first choice as the captain of the ODI and Test teams, but his performance in T20 has not been that good.
England-Ireland tour is ‘do or die’ for Surya
The upcoming England and Ireland tours are going to be very important for Suryakumar. Based on his performance in these series, BCCI will decide whether to continue him as captain till 2028 or not. The selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar believes that a young player should be drafted in place of Suryakumar.
However, coach Gautam Gambhir has supported Suryakumar Yadav. According to reports, Gambhir has asked BCCI to extend his coaching contract till 2028 and he wants Suryakumar to remain the captain. If Gill is not seen as Surya’s successor, the next option is Hardik Pandya. But, Gambhir is not a big fan of Hardik’s captaincy. At the same time, Jasprit Bumrah is worried about injury. In such a situation, if a decision is taken to replace Suryakumar, then the name of Sanju Samson, who has a good relationship with Gambhir, can also be considered. But, not being the captain of any IPL team at present can go against Sanju.
There will be big changes on England-Ireland tour!
The upcoming Ireland and England tours may indicate major changes in the Indian team. Reports also say that 15-year-old player Vaibhav Suryavanshi can be included in the senior Indian team for the Zimbabwe tour or the Asian Games to be held in Japan.
Overall, the series against Ireland could decide the future of Suryakumar Yadav’s international T20 career. Now it remains to be seen whether Suryakumar Yadav remains the captain of the Indian T20 team or someone else takes this responsibility.
