PM Modi, Donald Trump hold 40-minute telephonic conversation days after US-Iran talks failed in Pakistan

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump days after talks between Iran and the US failed in Islamabad. The talks were also significant has it came on the backdrop of the US announcing a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Both leaders reportedly spoke for about 40 minutes. It was also the third telephonic conversation between Modi and Trump this year. Both leaders earlier spoke on February 2 and March 24.

Reviewed substantial progress in various sectors: PM Modi

Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, “Received a call from my friend President Donald Trump. We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors. We are committed to further strengthening our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership in all areas. We also discussed the situation in West Asia and stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.”

Talks days after Trump announced blockade on Strait of Hormuz

Earlier on Sunday, Trump announced the blockade of the waterway, increasing the risk of further tensions with Iran. Tehran slammed the move, pointing out the step might impact the global economy. Tensions in the Middle East have increased after the US and Israel conducted a joint operation on Iran on February 28. As per reports, India and the US have signed some major agreements in the coming days and weeks, including energy.

Last week, the US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance and an Iranian delegation, led by the country’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, met in Islamabad for peace talks. The talks were held after both sides announced a ceasefire for 15 days. After 21 hours of discussions, both sides announced the failure of talks.
