One such reform is also being discussed for years, which is the Central Government Health Scheme. This scheme also provides health service to central government employees, pensioners and their dependents at affordable rates.

What is CGHS?

Let us tell you that CGHS is a health scheme in India, which gives service to employees and their families at low cost like doctor’s advice, treatment, examination and medicines. This scheme is mainly concentrated in urban areas, which limits its reach. The 6th and 7th Pay Commission had also recommended to bring a new health insurance plan in view of the limit of CGHS. The 7th Pay Commission, while further, had said that health insurance had also suggested for all employees and pensioners that CGHS should be listed under schemes like CS (MA) and ECHS so that they can also get cashless treatment.

Will the new scheme come?

In January 2025, it was reported that the Ministry of Health is considering removing CGHS and bringing an insurance based scheme. Its name can also be the name Central Government Employees and Pensioners Health Insurance Scheme (Cgephis). This scheme can also be implemented through the register insurance companies from IRDAI. However, there has been no official confirmation from the government.

The 8th Pay Commission has been formed and soon it will start its work. It will have to be seen whether this commission is now able to solve the year -old problem related to CGHS or not.
