Kanpur Kherepati Temple: The festival of Nag Panchami is considered very special in Hindu religion. This festival is dedicated to the worship of Nag Devta. This year this festival will be celebrated on 17th August. This festival is celebrated with great pomp throughout the country, but in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a different scene is seen on the day of Nag Panchami. Every year a huge fair is organized on Nag Panchami in the famous Kherepati temple of the city. In this fair, snakes are brought from different parts of the country and Lord Vishnu is decorated with them.
This temple is on Mall Road, a busy and prominent area of Kanpur city. A huge crowd of devotees is seen here throughout the month of Sawan, but on Nag Panchami, a wonderful scene is seen in the temple. Decorating the idol of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu with a pair of live snakes is considered to be the most unique tradition of this temple. The snakes are released in a special chamber made of glass along with the idol of Lord Vishnu.

When snakes are seen clinging to the statue of Lord Vishnu inside the glass, that sight fascinates everyone. On Nag Panchami, a large number of devotees reach the temple to see this special worship and adornment of the Lord. An exhibition of snakes can also be seen in the temple. A pair of wish-fulfilling snakes are also brought to this fair. The local people have unwavering devotion towards this temple.
Story related to Kherepati temple
People come here and take blessings of Lord Vishnu and Nag Devta. The history of Kherepati temple is said to be about 200 years old. There is a story related to the establishment of the temple, which is very interesting. According to the story, the mother of a local Seth of Kanpur had seen Sheshnag in her dream. Sheshnag had ordered him to establish a temple at this place.
When excavation was started to build the temple, an ancient well was found and many snakes were found in it. Since then it was believed that Sheshnag actually resides here.
