A ₹4 crore home purchase has left a Reddit user worried about raising another ₹70 lakh for registration and interiors. With handover due in 2028, the couple is weighing savings, loans and future family plans
A ₹4 crore property purchase has sparked a financial dilemma for a Reddit user, who is now trying to figure out how he and his wife can arrange another ₹70 lakh for registration and interiors before their new home is handed over in 2028.
The man shared his situation on Reddit’s r/personalfinanceindia, explaining that the couple had opted for a 50:50 payment arrangement for the property. While a large part of the purchase is already being supported by his father-in-law, the couple still faces significant expenses in the years ahead.
Couple Has ₹4 Crore Property But Needs Another ₹70 Lakh
According to the Reddit post, the couple purchased a property worth ₹4 crore. The man’s father-in-law has already contributed ₹2 crore towards the purchase using money he had saved for his daughter.
The remaining ₹2 crore is expected to be financed through a bank loan around December 2028, when the apartment is scheduled to be handed over.
However, the property purchase is not the only financial commitment on the couple’s list. The buyer estimates that they will need another ₹70 lakh for registration and interior work around the time of possession.
With roughly two years to prepare, he asked Reddit users how they could build up the required amount without putting excessive pressure on their finances.
Couple Earns Nearly ₹4 Lakh A Month, But Has Multiple Commitments
The man said he earns ₹2.35 lakh every month, while his monthly expenses come to around ₹1.51 lakh.
His expenses reportedly include rent for the couple’s current home, a housing loan on his property in his hometown, financial responsibilities towards his parents, travel and entertainment.
His wife earns ₹1.61 lakh a month and has expenses of approximately ₹30,000.
Together, the couple earns around ₹3.96 lakh every month and has stated monthly expenses of roughly ₹1.81 lakh. On paper, this leaves them with around ₹2.15 lakh that could potentially be directed towards investments and savings.
However, the upcoming ₹2 crore home loan could significantly change that calculation.
The Reddit user also raised another major question: whether they should consider having a child. He said his parents had been asking them to start a family, but given their current financial commitments, the couple was not planning to have a child immediately.
“With this amount, will we be able to pull it off? Parents are asking for having a kid but given the circumstances I don’t think we would plan for it,” he wrote.
Reddit Users Question Whether The Couple Has Overstretched
The post attracted considerable attention, with several Reddit users questioning whether purchasing such an expensive property was financially sensible despite the couple’s relatively strong combined income.
One user pointed out the couple’s dependence on family support and asked whether they had considered the possibility of losing one income in the future.
Another Redditor argued that the couple may have stretched their budget too far, suggesting that a property worth around ₹2 crore could have been a more comfortable choice.
The commenter said that if the father-in-law was willing to contribute ₹2 crore, the couple could potentially have chosen a ₹2 crore property and focused on building investments with their monthly surplus instead.
Another user described the purchase as a “heavy bet” and suggested that a ready-to-move-in property could have reduced some of the financial pressure, particularly because the couple is currently paying rent.
Some Redditors also suggested postponing the interior work. One user pointed out that the couple does not necessarily have to complete the interiors immediately after receiving possession and could move in later once they have accumulated enough money.
Another commenter focused on the future EMI burden. According to the user, the couple currently has around ₹2 lakh in monthly savings, while a ₹2 crore loan could result in an EMI of roughly ₹1.5 lakh a month at prevailing interest rates.
That, the Redditor argued, could leave the couple in a difficult position unless their incomes increase substantially or a large portion of the wife’s income is also directed towards the home loan.
The discussion ultimately highlighted a broader question faced by many homebuyers: a high household income does not necessarily mean an expensive property is financially comfortable. The couple now has two years to build its savings before possession, while also preparing for the long-term impact of the upcoming home loan and other major expenses.
