Do you also check Zomato and Swiggy apps again and again to order food? If yes, then very soon another new option is going to be added to your smartphone. After making its mark in the world of e-commerce, now Walmart-owned company ‘Flipkart’ is preparing to reach your dining table.

According to media reports, the company can start its ‘Food Delivery’ pilot project from Bengaluru in the month of May or June this year. This will be a kind of trial run. If everything goes as per plan and the response is good, then the company will launch its food delivery service across the country by the end of this year or early next year.

There is also a brainstorming going on within Flipkart on how to create its own identity in this crowded market. Company sources say that they do not want to become just another app, but are trying to create their own niche in the market.

Own app or with ONDC?

The biggest question before Flipkart is which route should it take to deliver food to your home. The company’s strategists are currently considering two options. The first is whether to move forward with the government-backed ‘Open Network for Digital Commerce’ (ONDC), as they had planned earlier. Or, create your own independent platform.

Interestingly, Flipkart had earlier also decided to enter the food delivery sector through ONDC, but things did not materialize then. Now whatever path is chosen, preparations are in full swing. It is reported that Flipkart has also started forming a dedicated team for this new vertical, which is proof that the company is in an all-out mood this time.

Why does Flipkart want to jump into the 10 minutes war?

India’s food delivery market is growing rapidly. This market is estimated to be around $9 billion in the financial year 2025. A report by brokerage firm Jefferies suggests that by 2030 this market could grow to $25 billion.

At present, this entire market is unilaterally ruled by Zomato and Swiggy. The stake of Rapido and ONDC is still very small. In such a situation, Flipkart feels that there is still scope for a strong player. Also, the increasing demand for delivery within 10 minutes has also made this sector more attractive.

Flipkart is already doing quick delivery service

Flipkart is also giving tough competition to Blinkit and Zepto. The company is investing rapidly in its quick commerce vertical ‘Flipkart Minutes’. Currently the company has more than 800 dark stores (distribution centers), and there are plans to increase their number further in the coming months. The objective of the company is clear, whether it is grocery or cooked food, the customer should not need to go anywhere else. Before its IPO, Flipkart wants to establish itself as a ‘super app’.
