Zomato-Blinkit has made a record on 31 December.
Food delivery platform Zomato and quick commerce firm BlinkIt delivered a record 75 lakh orders on New Year’s Eve on Wednesday. Deependra Goyal, founder of the platform’s parent company Eternal, said that the gig workers’ appeal for strike had no effect on them. He wrote in a post on
Work done without incentive
Goyal further said that all this was possible without any extra incentives to the delivery partners. On New Year’s Eve, more incentives are given than on normal days and December 31 was no different from the previous New Year’s Eve. Zomato was paying around Rs 120-150 per order to delivery partners on December 31. Zomato and Blinkit delivered at a record pace yesterday, unaffected by the strike calls heard over the past few days. Cooperation with local law enforcement agencies helped keep a handful of miscreants under control, allowing more than 4.5 lakh delivery partners in both the areas to function smoothly.
Strike was announced
The Labor Union claims that around 2,10,000 gig workers went on strike across the country on New Year’s Eve. A section of riders led by the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers and Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union went on strike on December 25 and 31, which are the busiest days of the year for food delivery and quick commerce companies. These companies have registered record orders on New Year’s Eve for the last two years. They set up war rooms on 31 December to ensure that their systems could handle the increased load.
What were the demands of the gig workers?
The unions called for a strike demanding better wages, safety and social security benefits. They also called for a ban on 10-minute delivery, saying it puts riders’ lives at risk when they rush to complete deliveries on time. In his post on He further said that the gig economy is one of the largest engines of organized employment generation in India, and its real impact will only grow with time as the children of delivery partners, with the support of stable income and education, join the workforce and contribute to transforming our country in a big way.
