Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh expressed strong confidence in the Indian cricket team’s potential to win the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. Speaking recently, he emphasized that the team’s management should avoid making excessive changes.
Instead, he suggested that establishing a solid core group of 16 to 20 players at least a year before the tournament would significantly enhance India’s chances of clinching the title.
The schedule for the tournament was unveiled in Cape Town, and with just one year remaining, the two-time champions are set to kick off their campaign against the current champions, Australia, on October 7 in Cape Town. Following that, India will face their arch-rivals Pakistan in Johannesburg on October 10.
India is also scheduled to compete against Afghanistan, a qualifying team, and co-host Zimbabwe. The final match will take place on November 21 in Johannesburg. Yuvraj stated in an interview with ‘JioStar’, “In my opinion, there shouldn’t be too many changes. You need to have your team ready at least a year before the World Cup, as every position requires experience. Players batting in the top and middle order must get enough game time. Don’t think too far ahead; if you focus solely on winning the World Cup now, you’ll put too much pressure on yourselves.”
He added, “Just move forward comfortably and ensure your 16 to 20 players are ready to play. The team should arrive in South Africa at least a month before the World Cup for preparation. Looking at this team, I am confident in their ability to win the World Cup.”
Yuvraj, a hero of the 2011 ODI World Cup victory, was joined by his former teammate Suresh Raina. Raina pointed out that India’s current style of play and quality significantly outstrip that of Pakistan. Historically, matches between the two teams have often been one-sided, with India maintaining an 8-0 record against Pakistan in World Cup encounters.
Raina remarked, “The Indian team is well ahead in every aspect. The players have improved remarkably, and their fearless batting and aggressive play are unprecedented.” He acknowledged that while matches against Pakistan generate immense excitement among fans, he believes the Indian team is currently much stronger.
Looking ahead, he noted, “This is a World Cup match, and Pakistan will have support in South Africa. However, I believe we have an excellent team with fast bowlers who can handle pressure effectively. After victories in 1983 and 2011, it’s time to aim for our third World Cup in 2027. The hopes and prayers of India’s 1.4 billion people will be with the team. I think India will win easily against Pakistan.”
