Wasim Jaffer has shared his take on Rohit Sharma and said that the team needs his experience if he wants to play the 2027 ODI World Cup.
During the third ODI between India and England at Lord’s, a report emerged that it was Rohit’s last ODI and the selectors were set to drop him. The former India captain slammed his critics with a century in the fixture. He has been retained for the West Indies series and will make his return on Sunday (September 27). In the same video, Jaffer said that Suryakumar Yadav’s case should have been handled better.
“In Rohit’s case, if he is playing, he will have eyes on the 2027 World Cup, and you need that experience. I said this again in Surya’s case as well. You removed him right after the World Cup. These things could have been handled better. Even Shami’s case. He still has to prove himself. This is saddening,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.
For the unversed, Suryakumar was sacked as captain and dropped from the T20I team despite him leading the Men in Blue to a title win in the 2026 World Cup. He was eyeing a gold medal win in the 2028 LA Olympics, but the selection committee had other plans.
The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee recalled Shreyas Iyer, who hadn’t played a T20I since 2023, and handed him the team’s charge.
The selectors have been ignoring Mohammed Shami and he has been out of the national team since the 2023 ODI World Cup final. With 24 wickets in only seven matches, Shami finished as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker. He was on the bench in four games.
Rohit Sharma set for return
Sharma will make his return to international cricket in the three-match ODI series against West Indies. The series opener will be held on Sunday (September 27) in Kerala. Guwahati and New Chandigarh will host the next two games on September 30 and October 3, respectively.
