The year 2025 was historic for Indian Railways. This year, Railways took many big decisions related to technology, environment, passenger convenience, safety and network expansion. These steps gave momentum to Railways towards building a modern, digital, inclusive and future-ready transport system.
Vande Bharat and expansion of high-speed trains
Rapid expansion of Vande Bharat Express network in 2025. Plans for advanced versions like Vande Bharat 4.0 were also revealed, whose aim is to provide more speed and better comfort. The introduction of semi-high-speed trains and trials of upgraded trainsets promoted faster and better intercity travel.
Big focus on technology and security
This year, Railways took steps towards modernizing the old train control system. Kavach Automatic Train Protection System was implemented and work on eliminating ungated level crossings was expedited. Almost complete electrification of the broad gauge network was also a major achievement, making operations cleaner.
Green initiative: hydrogen-powered train
Moving towards green transport, Indian Railways prepared the first hydrogen train in the country. It was prepared for trial run, making India among the countries which are working on zero-emission trains.
Digital improvements for passengers
In 2025, the passenger reservation system was redesigned and digital platforms like Swirl were introduced. Aadhaar authentication made mandatory in Tatkal ticket booking. To stop fake booking, IRCTC blocked more than 3 crore suspicious user IDs. Special facilities were also extended for elderly, pregnant women, disabled and visually impaired passengers.
Network expansion and special trains
To handle the rush of passengers, 89 special trains were run in December. New superfast trains like Swarn Nagari Express were also introduced, which strengthened tourism and economic corridors.
budget and investment
A provision of more than Rs 2.7 lakh crore was made for Railways in the Union Budget 2025. In this, special attention was paid to infrastructure, electrification, security technology and passenger facilities.
Lowest train accidents in 20 years
The number of train accidents in 2025 was the lowest in the last 20 years. Only 11 accidents were registered between April and November. Although some major accidents also occurred, overall there was a big improvement in safety.
freight transport and modern engines
Strength was also seen in the freight sector. More powerful electric locomotives were added and freight performance improved throughout the year. Overall, 2025 was a year of changes for Indian Railways. Railways has laid a strong foundation for the future on every front including technology, safety, environment and passenger convenience.
