SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The New York Yankees triumphed over the San Francisco Giants with a score of 7-0 on Wednesday night, marking the beginning of the Major League Baseball season.
Despite Aaron Judge going hitless and striking out four times, the Yankees showcased strong offensive performance.
José Caballero contributed significantly by driving in the go-ahead run during a five-run second inning. This game also featured the debut of the Automated Ball-Strike System, often referred to as the robot umpire, which faced its first challenge from Caballero during the fourth inning.
Pitching Highlights
Max Fried (1-0) excelled on the mound, allowing only two hits over 6 1/3 innings, becoming the fifth Yankees pitcher since 1969 to achieve at least 6 1/3 shutout innings on opening day. This victory also marked the Yankees’ first shutout win on the road in an opener since 1967.
Robot Umpire in Action
During the fourth inning, Webb (0-1) faced a controversial strike call that was upheld by the Automated Ball-Strike System, which utilizes 12 Hawk-Eye cameras. Caballero challenged the call but was unsuccessful, highlighting the technology’s role in the game.
Judge’s Opening Day Experience
Judge, who began his 11th major league season, faced boos from the crowd during his at-bats. The California native had previously been pursued by the Giants during the 2022 free agency but opted for the Yankees’ substantial nine-year, $360 million contract.
Next Game Preview
The Yankees and Giants will continue their series on Friday afternoon, with RHP Cam Schlittler taking the mound for New York against left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray.
