Actress Yami Gautam celebrated India’s rich handloom heritage by showcasing a black Maheshwari saree woven by a seventh-generation Salvi family artisan from Maheshwar, highlighting the craftsmanship and tradition behind the iconic weave.
In a recent Instagram post, the Bala actress shared photographs of herself wearing the saree, which was crafted using silk, cotton and zari. She highlighted the generations of artisans who have preserved Maheshwari weaving and the role of traditional craftsmanship in keeping the handloom alive.
“The black Maheshwari saree is woven by a seventh-generation Salvi family weaver from Maheshwar, carrying forward a family legacy of handloom craftsmanship. Woven in silk, cotton and Zari. Maheshwari weaving was nurtured by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, who brought skilled weavers to Maheshwar. The beauty is in the hands that have kept this craft alive for generations,” Yami wrote.
In the pictures, Yami is seen posing in the black saree featuring golden detailing along the borders. She paired the traditional attire with matching earrings, a high bun and subtle makeup.
The actress also wore the same black Maheshwari saree while receiving the National Award for Best Actress for her performance in Article 370. The 72nd National Film Awards were held on September 22 in Kevadia, Gujarat.
Maheshwari weaving is a traditional handloom craft associated with Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh. According to the source material, the craft was promoted in the 18th century by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of the Holkar dynasty, who invited skilled weavers from Surat and South India to create special sarees for royal guests.
