Yam Diya benefits: Dhanteras is celebrated on the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. Lord Dhanvantari, Kuber Dev and Mother Lakshmi are worshiped on this day. Purchasing gold, silver and new utensils on this day is considered auspicious. On the evening of Dhanteras, after worshiping Lord Kuber and Dhanvantari Dev, a lamp in the name of Yamraj is lit. When will Yam Diya light up?

This time it is Dhanteras on 18 October 2025 and the lamp of Yama will be lit on the same evening. Yama’s lamp is lit on the night of Dhanteras (Yam Deepdaan) and it is lit for 5 consecutive days, which continues till Bhai Dooj. This lamp is lit outside the main entrance of the house in the south direction and is lit every day and immersed the next day.

Why is Yama’s lamp lit on Dhanteras?

According to religious belief, Dhanteras Yama’s Diya (lamp) is lit to remove the fear of untimely death and to receive blessings of long life and health from Yamraj. The tradition of lighting the Yam lamp is followed on the day of Dhanteras or Narak Chaturdashi, where Yamraj is worshiped and the lamp is lit in the south direction. This lamp is also called ‘Yam-Deep’ or ‘Yam Deepdaan’.

How to light Yam Diya on Dhanteras?

  • Light a lamp outside the main entrance of the house facing south.
  • Use a big or four-sided lamp made of clay, flour or cow dung.
  • Put two or four long cotton wicks in the lamp and add mustard oil.
  • Do not keep the lamp directly on the ground, but place it on some rice or flowers.
  • Light Yama Deepak in the evening, especially during Pradosh period.
  • While lighting the Yama lamp, chant the mantra “Om Yamdevaya Namah”.

Rules for lighting Yam Diya

A new and four-sided lamp should be lit every day.

Yama lamp should be kept outside the main entrance of the house in the south direction.

After lighting the Yama lamp, one should not look back and it should be immersed the next day.
