New Delhi: X has started rolling out an updated photo editor inside its app, adding more editing options powered by its AI tool, Grok. The update lets users make changes to photos by simply typing what they want, instead of using manual tools. This brings the platform closer to apps that are mainly built for photo editing.
The new editor also includes basic features like blurring faces, hiding certain parts of an image, drawing on photos and adding text. Overall, the idea is to make editing quicker and more accessible, especially for users who are not familiar with advanced tools.
AI editing through simple prompts
Ladies and gentlemen, we’re launching a brand new Photo Editor in our post composer.
It has long-overdue features like drawing & text. But we also included special add-ons that are unique to X:
• Edit with words, powered by Grok
• Add a blur to redact parts of the photo… pic.twitter.com/38Zaw8b5jl— Nikita Bier (@nikitabier) April 7, 2026
One of the main additions is the option to edit photos using simple text prompts. Users can just type what they want to change, and Grok will try to do it. In a demo shared by Nikita Bier, an image was changed to look like it was hanging inside a museum. That example looked a bit advanced, but basic edits like changing the background or removing something from the frame should be easier to do.
This kind of feature is already being used by some other apps as well. Instead of adjusting everything manually, users just describe the edit and the tool handles it. It may not always be perfect, but it does make quick edits easier, especially for people who don’t use editing apps much.
Safety concerns and past issues
X had earlier allowed users to tag Grok in replies and ask it to edit images freely. However, that feature led to misuse. Reports suggested that people created inappropriate and sexualised images, including some involving minors. After that, the company restricted these tools and limited certain features to paid users.
There are also ongoing legal and regulatory concerns. The company behind X is facing a lawsuit in the US over claims that images were misused. At the same time, authorities in Europe are looking into similar complaints about non-consensual image creation.
The updated photo editor is currently available on iOS, while the Android version is expected to arrive soon.
